It was 11:00 PM, my laptop was glowing with work tabs, and I was thinking about everything I still wanted to do.

Finish some work. Write something. Have a little time to myself.

And somewhere between those thoughts, a question: Is there actually a secret formula to have it all?

It’s a lot to ask of an evening.

What stands out to me about that moment is how easily the things I hadn’t done became the things I noticed. There was work open in front of me. There were children asleep. There was a whole day behind us. Yet my attention went straight to what was missing.

Maybe you know that feeling. You finally get a quiet moment, and everything you wanted to do with it arrives at once. You want to finish some work, write something, have a thought without being interrupted. You’d also quite like to go to bed.

All perfectly reasonable things to want. Slightly harder to fit into the same hour.

What does “having it all” even look like?

When I try to picture it, there’s a lot happening.

There’s being present with the kids. Doing work that matters. Building something I’m excited about. Finding time to write while the thought is still fresh. And somewhere in there, having enough space to enjoy the life I’m putting so much effort into.

Written down, those wishes feel ordinary. I can understand wanting every one of them.

The difficult part is expecting them all to happen smoothly, at the same time, with enough energy left over to appreciate how well everything is going.

Even the imagined version sounds exhausting.

I want to leave room for ambition. There are things I want to make, ideas I want to follow, and conversations I want to be part of. Having children doesn’t make those parts of me disappear.

But caring about several things means living with the fact that they’ll sometimes compete for my attention. On an ordinary evening, something will have to wait. I can spend that evening arguing with the limit, or I can decide what fits.

Neither choice adds another hour.

The quiet pockets count. So does closing the laptop.

There’s something comforting about finding a quiet pocket of time. A little space opens up, and you do what you can with it.

A few paragraphs can be enough to get a thought out of your head. A small piece of work can move something forward. It doesn’t have to be a perfect, uninterrupted afternoon to count.

I also want to leave room for the evening when that quiet pocket arrives and I’m done.

Otherwise, “just show up” becomes another thing to live up to. The children are asleep, the house is quiet, and now I’m supposed to make excellent use of every remaining minute.

I’d like to be able to close the laptop without turning it into a verdict on how much I want the things I’m working toward.

They’ll still matter in the morning.

Making peace with this doesn’t mean every trade-off feels good. It can be disappointing to leave an idea unfinished. It can be frustrating to have the energy at the wrong time, or the time when your brain has already packed up for the day.

There’s room to admit that, too. I don’t need to find a beautiful lesson in every unfinished task.

Sometimes I simply wanted to do more than I had room for.

For now, that feels like a kinder place to begin. I can look at what needs my attention, what can wait, and what I’m expecting from myself. I can change a plan that keeps asking too much. I can come back to something after a few days away.

I want to build a life I enjoy being in while the work is still unfinished.

There will probably be more late nights at my laptop. There will also be evenings when I leave things for tomorrow. I’d like to feel okay about both, without needing to prove I made the most productive choice.

I want to build a life I enjoy being in while the work is still unfinished.
